JOB DESCRIPTIONS

 

1st AD- The assistant director works in conjunction with the director and production manager to make the shooting schedule as efficient as possible. They break down the script into different time slots for the scenes and help manage the scheduling of talent, crew and any other necessities for the day.

Hair/Makeup Artist- This person or people is responsible for creating a variety of looks for all of the characters in conjunction with the director’s desires and script. They are responsible for differentiating the looks from other actors, applying makeup to all skin types and styling hair with all textures. Throughout production, they have to make sure the look is maintained and conveyed properly on camera for each take. Depending on the film, they may need to apply special effects makeup and be creative with their methods.

Wardrobe Department- They determine what actors are going to wear based on the scripts character portrayals and communication with director. Costume Designers create or shop for all of the wardrobe worn by the actors and are responsible for getting sizes, organizing and maintaining costumes throughout filming. This department is also diverse from project to project depending on the genre and era. Costumes need to be conveyed properly so this may require research on fashion history and proper job uniforms. They are also responsible for making clothes look the part by distressing/dirtying and knowing how to work with “blood.”

Art Department- This department is responsible for the look/feel of the film. They may build, construct, paint, sculpt or buy items to achieve this. There is a variety of props shown throughout TV/Film scenes that this department is very diverse from project to project.

Gaffer-  They are responsible for the lighting plan according to the Director of Photography. This includes setting up the lights and cables, creating patterns, coloring lights, diffusing light or blocking light. Also they provide special rigging, securing and safety measures on set. 

​

Director of Photography- They are responsible for the vision of the movie. They recommend the type of camera and what lenses to use as well as lighting directions. They design, frame and decide the movement of the shot in conjunction with the director. 

​

Sound Department- This department is in charge of leveling, monitoring and recording all sounds in production. They decide on the microphones used, placement of microphones and where the boom operator will go. The boom operator holds the boom pole during the take in close proximity to the actors/audio while remaining out of the way of the frame, and avoiding the camera and lights. 

​

Script Supervisor- The script supervisor is in charge of making sure everything is going according to the script. This entails knowing what has been shot, needs to be shot, and all of the notes from each take of the shots. During filming, they ensure the dialogue is correct and will feed the actor lines if necessary. They are also responsible for making sure every detail is consistent with the overall continuity of all departments. For example, if the script says the actor is holding a prop then they will make sure that actor is always holding that prop for that scene. Also they work in post production to provide their notes on which shot was the best take.

Editor- The editor works in post production with the director and script supervisor to select the best takes and piece them together in the best sequence to convey the overall vision of the script. The editor is responsible for adding the music, dialogue, sound effects, and to make any revisions necessary. 

​

Composer- The composer creates and arranges original musical scores. They work with the director in post production to determine where scores should be placed, how long it should be played and the reasoning and mood behind that scene placement. They work hand in hand with orchestras, copyists and programmers to create original musical scores.  

​

Director- This is the lead creative director or visionary behind the script. The director works in pre-production, production and post-production to ensure the vision is executed properly. The director plays a role in the casting, script revisions, how the film is shot, working with actors, and editing.  

​
